Experimental Characterization of Upper Trailing Edge Flaps for Transonic Buffet Control
نویسندگان
چکیده
Abstract This experimental study investigates the possibility of controlling transonic buffet by means a trailing edge flap with an upward deflection (referred to as “upper flap”, or: UTEF). Different geometries (straight and serrated) dimensions UTEFs (with heights ranging between 1 2% chord) have been studied respect their impact on behavior. The effectiveness has investigated schlieren particle image velocimetry (PIV) in transonic-supersonic wind tunnel TU Delft at Ma = 0 . 70, α 3 5°. results demonstrated efficacy use for reducing range oscillations when height UTEF was equal least 1.5%c. result corroborated flow characterization PIV data which highlighted that, presence control system, not only shock oscillation is reduced but also intensity separated area pulsation. serrated UTEFs, despite having effect local field, found be ineffective alleviating oscillations. adoption best behaving configuration 2%c UTEF) proved slightly alter circulation value compared clean configuration, while it effective off-buffet condition (Ma 74 2 5°).

An investigation of unsteady 3D effects on trailing edge flaps
The present study investigates the impact of unsteady and viscous three-dimensional aerodynamic effects on a wind turbine blade with trailing edge flap by means of CFD. Harmonic oscillations are simulated on the DTU 10 MW rotor with a flap of 10% chord extent ranging from 70% to 80% blade radius. The deflection frequency is varied in the range between 1p and 6p. To quantify 3D effects, rotor si...
متن کاملA Comparison of Smart Rotor Control Approaches Using Trailing Edge Flaps and Individual Pitch Control
Modern wind turbines have been steadily increasing in size, and have now become very large, with recent models boasting rotor diameters greater than 120 m. Reducing the loads experienced by the wind turbine rotor blades is one means of lowering the cost of energy of wind turbines. Wind turbines are subjected to significant and rapid fluctuating loads, which arise from a variety of sources inclu...

Continuous Robust Control for Two-Dimensional Airfoils with Leading- and Trailing-Edge Flaps
In this paper, a class of multi-input/multi-output aeroelastic systems with unstructured nonlinear uncertainty is considered. By using leadingand trailing-edge control surface actuations, a continuous robust controller is proposed to suppress the aeroelastic vibrations of a nonlinearwing-sectionmodelwith plunging andpitching degrees of freedom. Under amild restriction that the system uncertaint...
متن کاملModel Predictive Control of Trailing Edge Flaps on a Wind Turbine Blade
Trailing Edge Flaps on wind turbine blades have been studied in order to achieve fatigue load reduction on the turbine components. We show in this paper how Model Predictive Control can be used to do frequency weighted control of the trailing edge flaps in order to reduce fatigue damage on the blade root. The design model is based on a modal model of the blade structure and a steady state aerod...
